We follow a bilingual philosophy. We recognize that students coming to New York School for the Deaf have a diverse linguistic background. For many students, American Sign Language is their first language. For other students, Spoken English is their first language.Still, other students communicate through another language. At New York School for the Deaf, we value all languages, and believe that children benefit from full and ongoing access to language.

NYSD Parent ASL Classes We offer several ASL courses for parents at various days and times throughout the week. Parents or guardians of Fanwood students can take the courses free of charge. For more information on how to participate in these classes, click HERE (English) Spanish Version
The Early Intervention Program (EIP) offers a variety of therapeutic and support services to eligible infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families through the Department of Health. Our Family Infant Program (FIP) provides an educational program for children with a hearing loss and their families, including home based and center based services. Families can participate in both the EIP and the FIP.
Absolutely. Athletics allow for deaf children to compete on a level playing field with other children. At New York School for the Deaf, students must maintain good grades and show proper classroom behavior in order to participate in team sports and extra curricular programs.
New York School for the Deaf is a member of the Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association and competes in soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, basketball, and track & field.
In order to be eligible to attend NYSD, a student must have a documented hearing loss, and be between the ages of 0 to 21 years. Other determining factors may include the extent of the loss, and the impact to the child’s education.
NYSD's admissions personnel will guide you through the application process and provide the necessary evaluations.
Once a referral has been made, an application for approval for evaluation to attend a 4201, state supported school (PHC-10) is completed. A current audiogram is needed to complete this application process.

The IDEA Notice of Policy Guidance of 1992 states that evaluations of students who are deaf or hard of hearing should provide information about the impact of hearing loss on the student’s language development and acquisition. Evaluators at New York School for the Deaf are qualified and knowledgeable about issues relating to deafness, and able to communicate directly with the child.
