NYSD 2 vs Masters 0

25-12, 25-10

Fanwood won in straight sets against the Masters School (25-12, 25-10) on Thursday. Alora J. earned 13 service points, and 1 ace. Samantha P. earned 3 assists & 3 kills. Also, Nicole P. contributed 1 ace, 3 assists and 1 kill.

Our current record is 5-8
NYSD Volleyball plays home on October 18 vs. The Harvey School at 4:00pm

October 11, 2016
NYSD 2 vs ASD 3

25-22, 15-25, 25-16, 21-25, 13-15

Fanwood lost another very close game against American School for the Deaf (ASD) on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. After three sets, Fanwood was in the lead with a score of 2-1, but ultimately allowed ASD to win the last two sets. Although we didn’t bring home the win, it was a very fun game! Samantha P. led the team with 17 service points, 6 aces, and 4 kills.

NYSD 2 vs MPS 3
20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 10-15

Fanwood’s volleyball team traveled to Framingham, MA to play against Marie Philip School (MPS) last Friday. After a long trip, the Fanwood Ladies lost the first two sets (20-25, 21-25). Finally, the team woke up and dominated the next two sets (25-17, 25-19).

Unfortunately, NYSD didn’t win the last set, and MPS won the game (10-15). NYSD’s Kiara showed great improvement during this game, earning 18 service points and 6 kills!

NYSD 3 vs PSD 0
25-9, 25-6, 25-13

NYSD’s volleyball dominated PSD in three sets (25-9, 25-6, 25-13). Anjel led the team with 20 service points, 2 aces, 2 assists, and a kill. Samantha earned 11 service points, 5 aces, two assists, a kill, and 3 digs. Nicole Perrin contributed 1 assist, 4 kills, 3 digs, and a block. Silmara, Britney, Alora, and Roza each earned a kill. Also, Alora & Roza each earned an ace.

Lexington School for the Deaf hosted the Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament on October 1, 2016. The deaf schools participating were American School for the Deaf, Delaware School for the Deaf, and New York School for the Deaf.

NYSD’s first game of the tournament was against was Lexington School for the Deaf. The Lady Tornadoes beat them in two consecutive sets (25-9, 25-18). It was one of our favorite games because the girls played really well and several of players showed great improvement.

Samantha P., led the team with 14 service points, three aces, 4 assists, and one kill.  Nicole P., earned one assist and two kills. Kiara H., earned two kills. Anjel P., & Rosalinda T., each earned one kill. Lastly, Silmara C., earned one assist & one kill.

As for the second match, the team played a close game against American School for the Deaf. NYSD beat ASD in the first set, (25-20).

Unfortunately, NYSD allowed ASD to dominate the two next sets (19-25, 23-25). Samantha led the team with 16 service points, 6 aces, 4 kills, and one digs. Anjel earned 10 service points, 1 ace, and one kill. The rest of the team earned 19 service points, 4 aces, three assists, and 4 digs.

In the final game of the tournament, NYSD ended the day in a match against Delaware School for the Deaf (DSD). Unfortunately, NYSD suffered due to loss of energy from the two previous matches and allowed DSD to control the game (14-25, 15-25).

Consistency in energy and a stronger mentality are two areas NYSD needs to improve upon. The team earned 16 service points, 5 assists, 5 kills, and three digs. Also, Alora J., earned two blocks.

The team would like to extend gratitude to Lexington School for the Deaf, for being wonderful hosts. Coaches, Kandace and April, are very proud of their players because they played really well as a team. “The players consistently surprise us, improving their skills everyday. We have a feeling that October will be a good month for all of us.” The coaches and team also, we want to say thank you to John Diehl, Jackie Thorne, and several of Fanwood students who the cheer on the team.

The next home game will be on October 5th against Pennsylvania school for the Deaf.

NYSD 3 vs NJSD 2

25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 19-25, 15-12

Fanwood’s volleyball team traveled to Trenton, New Jersey to play against Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf (MKSD) last Wednesday, and dominated the first two sets, 25-20 & 25-16. Fanwood made several simple errors and allowed MKSD to take control over the next two sets, 23-25 & 19-25.

As for the last set, the Fanwood ladies woke up and were able to finish with a win, 15-12. Samantha P. led the team with seven service points, two aces, four assists, two kills, and two digs. Rosalinda T., Silmara C., and Kiara H. each earned two kills. Also, Rosalinda earned three assists and two digs. -Head Coach Kandace Morris

NYSD 2 Stormers 3
13-25, 25-12, 25-20, 12-25, 7-15

New York School for the Deaf’s volleyball team lost to the Stormers (13-25, 25-12, 25-20, 12-25, 7-15). The players struggled defensively and in serves received, which contributed to the lost. Samantha P. led the team with 15 serving points, 4 aces, 1 assist, and 4 digs. – Head Coach Kandace Morris

September 24, 2016
NYSD vs American School for the Deaf

25-18, 25-10, 24-26, 25-20

Our volleyball team opened NYSD’s Homecoming Day with a four set win over American School for the Deaf (25-18, 25-10, 24-26, 25-20).

During the first two sets, the girls played with such high energy and passion. As for our third set, we became a little too comfortable and allowed American School for the Deaf respond with strong play & they won this set.

Our girls were able to escape with a victory after fourth set. Samantha P. led the team with 23 service points, 8 aces, 2 assists, and 5 digs. Anjel P. earned 10 service points, 1 ace, two assists, and a kill.

It was a special opportunity for these teams to compete against each other because both schools are celebrating 200th anniversary this year. -Head Coach Kandace Morris

NYSD 0 vs Thornton-Donovan School 3
13-25, 14-25, 19-25

New York School for the Deaf’s volleyball team was unable to defeat Thornton-Donovan School (13-25, 14-25, 19-25) on September 23. NYSD seemed to lack focus and their mentality cost the game. The Fanwood Ladies earned 18 service points, 1 ace, three assists, three kills, and three digs.

We, New York School for the Deaf, played our first home game against Lexington School for the Deaf on September 21st, 2016. Unfortunately, we were unable to put up a good defense and lost three straight sets. Even though our weak serving cost the game, the chemistry between our players has improved greatly. Our positivity and determination is still very much alive! We are so excited about the next game happening on Homecoming day this Saturday. Come cheer us on!

Next Game: NYSD vs ASD on 9/24 at 11:00 in New York School for the Deaf – Gym.
